This track is one of the most-popular ABBA songs, It was recorded in August 1979 in order to help promote their North American and European tour of that year, and was released on ABBA’s Greatest Hits Vol. 2 album as the brand new track. Polar released the single in Norway, Denmark, and Finland, but didn’t make it available in the Swedish record stores. The stores imported copies of the United Kingdom version on Epic Records.

About The Song

This was arguably ABBA’s most influential track as its emphasis on electronics made it a very important record for techno musicians in the post-disco era.
The band originally planned the song “Rubber Ball Man” with classical strings and usual two vocal parts of Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstadas as a single instead of “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)”. They even rehearsed it for their 1977 tour as “Under My Sun”, but eventually decided that “Gimme…” fits better as a single with its disco sound. “Rubber Ball Man” was never released.
The song “Hung Up” by Madonna uses some samples from this song. Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson gave her the permission which happened only for the second time. The first time was when Fugees were allowed to use a sample of “The Name Of The Game” for their hit “Rumble in the Jungle” in 1996.
This song was the first single released from the soundtrack for the film “Mamma Mia!” (2008) performed by Amanda Seyfried. She also sings it in a music video to promote the single and the movie.

Lyric

🎵 Let’s sing along with the lyrics! 🎤

Half past twelve
And I’m watching the late show in my flat all alone
How I hate to spend the evening on my own
Autumn winds
Blowing outside the window as I look around the room
And it makes me so depressed to see the gloomThere’s not a soul out there
No one to hear my prayerGimme, gimme, gimme a man after midnight
Won’t somebody help me chase the shadows away?
Gimme, gimme, gimme a man after midnight
Take me through the darkness to the break of the day

Movie stars
Find the end of the rainbow, with a fortune to win
It’s so different from the world I’m living in
Tired of T.V.
I open the window and I gaze into the night
But there’s nothing there to see, no one in sight

There’s not a soul out there
No one to hear my prayer

Gimme, gimme, gimme a man after midnight
Won’t somebody help me chase the shadows away?
Gimme, gimme, gimme a man after midnight
Take me through the darkness to the break of the day

Gimme, gimme, gimme a man after midnight…
Gimme, gimme, gimme a man after midnight…

There’s not a soul out there
No one to hear my prayer

Gimme, gimme, gimme a man after midnight
Won’t somebody help me chase the shadows away?
Gimme, gimme, gimme a man after midnight
Take me through the darkness to the break of the day
Gimme, gimme, gimme a man after midnight
Won’t somebody help me chase the shadows away?
Gimme, gimme, gimme a man after midnight
Take me through the darkness to the break of the day
